Acting on tip from someone I follow on Twitter, I’m checking out Moodle this morning. It’s an open source content management system that offer educators a number of courseware features including lessons, quizzes, surveys, assignments, chat, forums and much more.

The install base is geographically broad (world-wide) and in terms of size, I’ve seen everything from small schools supporting 100s of users up to large systems built to support 200,000+ students and educators.

They’re also pushing PHP 5.2 in their roadmap. PHP 5.x adoption continues to lag, for no good reason IMHO, so I’m always happy to see developers push along these lines.

Good stuff.

I’ve considered picking up a copy of Building Online Learning Communities: Effective Strategies for the Virtual Classroom for the last week or so—maybe I’ll download moodle, run the install, and take a look under the hood while I’m reading that.
