Daddy, is the President more important than Jesus?

Out of the mouth of babes, or in this case, my 5 year old daughter:

“Daddy, is the President more important than Jesus?”

She lay that one on me last night…

Coming from a kid with a Jewish mother and a dad who tries to instill in his daughter the teachings of Buddha when he can, it’s not all that surprising of a question.

She’s always had a keen interest in ceremony—at the age of three, she would lead us in prayer on the Sabbath (imagine a very serious little girl chanting “Barukh atah adonai eloheinu melech haolam…”) and lately she’s begun to express an equal interest in the affairs of government thanks in no small part to my father.

I’ll spare you from my commentary (feel free to post your own in the comments below) but I got a kick out of her questions last night:

• Is the President more important than Jesus?
• Do people believe in the President like they do Jesus or Buddha?
• Can girls be President? (you see where her line of thinking is going, don’t you?)

I wonder if she’s too young to start teaching her about Kallipolis and Plato’s philosopher-kings. Sure, I’m biased but I think she’d make a good one.

I’m a trifle deaf in this ear…speak a little louder next time

This morning, Anitra and I were in the kitchen getting ready to leave. She was putting a few cheese crackers into a bag to take as a snack and said to me, “these Target cheezits are really good if you want to try them.”

I misunderstood what she said though.

I thought she said “Target Jesus” not “Target Cheez-its”. I really need to get my hearing checked.

“I know you have all wondered just how many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll in a tootsie pop. So after counting as I licked my red sucker today I figured it out. It takes 112 licks to reach the tootsie roll.”

- Kelli Wise

Did you know:

According to Tootsie Roll Industries, they have received approximately 20,000 letters from children around the world who believe they have solved the mystery behind how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Estimates from children seem to run from a low of 100 licks to a high of 5,800 licks, with most of them ranging from 600-800 licks.

A group of students at Swathmore School used human lickers in a scientific experiment and determined it took an average of 144 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Students at Whittier Elementary in Waukesha, WI determined that it takes an average of 9 minutes to reach the center of a Tootsie Pop.

Tootsie Roll History:

1896

Austrian immigrant Leo Hirshfield brings to the U.S. his recipe for a chocolatey, chewy candy, which he begins producing in a small store in New York City.

Hirshfield names the candy after his five-year-old daughter, whose nickname is “Tootsie.”

1931

The Tootsie Pop, consisting of hard candy on the outside and chocolatey, chewy Tootsie Roll on the inside, is invented.

2003

Company production reaches more than 60 million Tootsie Rolls and 20 million Tootsie Pops each day.

Sweden? No, you don’t want to live there. It is a tall country and the people are boring.
