spammer - justalkaboutit.com

Anyone else getting hit with comment spam from “Bill” at justalkaboutit . com?

I don’t mind if someone pimps their site in a sig if they post a legitimate comment. This guy on the other hand has dropped several comments over the last couple of days on gaming related posts - all of which were nothing more than “cool, thanks for sharing” posts with a link back to justalkaboutit . com. (Talk about a bad way to build traffic to your business!)

Most comment spammers I deal with are from China, Hong Kong, and the occasional trickle from Romania. Normally I just ban their IP address and voila - they’re never seen again. Bill (.(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)) from justalkaboutit . com is hitting me from a Comcast IP though (76.98.48.230) and I’m reluctant to simply block that one.

Any suggestions that don’t involve the guy from the previous post or bacon?

I finally got around to cleaning up the mess that was my web site. Hope you like the new look, courtesy of NodeThirtyThree Design.

With Skent due in the next few weeks, there will be little time for mucking about templates.

EE Upgrade - smooth as always

Another smooth upgrade in Expression Engine.

20 minutes later and I’m running the latest version and build complete with the newly released Wiki Module.

The Wiki integrates with ExpressionEngine’s Membership Module, supports multiple wikis on a single ExpressionEngine installation and much more.

I probably won’t use it on this site but I have several other sites running on EE where it may be helpful.

I Hate Internet Explorer

I really, really, really, really hate it. The developers of this most horrendous browser should have been fired by Microsoft years ago.

Look what it does to my site:

According to my stats, only 9% of the people visiting my site use IE (the rest are using Firefox, Safari and Camino) but I simply do not understand why those people continue to use IE.

I’m seriously thinking about implementing some of the code from the Explorer Destroyer campaign.

If you’re using IE to view this site today and you can’t get to it sometime in the near future, consider yourself warned. Go download Firefox (or Camino if you’re on a Mac).

The suspense is killing me

I guess this explains why my Google Analytics stats are still empty…

From their Help section:

I have installed Google Analytics, but all or some of my data is missing from my reports.

Currently, report updating for Google Analytics is experiencing delays. As a result, you may not be seeing any data in your reports even after implementing the Analytics tracking code.

We are currently in the process of updating all reports. You should be able to see these updates in 24 hours. While this is going on, you may notice different reports updating at different rates. Once this process has completed, all data should be restored to your profiles. Please be assured that this update process has no effect on data collection.

We apologize for any inconvenience. This reporting delay is associated with unexpected demand for Google Analytics. Under normal circumstances, the data in your reports will be at most 24 hours old.

Google is slowly opening the door to their Analytics application.

When Google first launched their free Google Analytics service, they were quickly innundated with service requests and (unexpected?) traffic volumes which resulted in poor performance of the service. If you’ve ever watched someone compile WebTrends or any other traffic analysis reports, you can easily understand why. The processing time and server load for crunching raw log files is extremely high - especially for heavily visited sites. Google should have known better and their error caused them to suspend new account registrations 10 days after the service launched.

Google’s response was to close the door for six weeks to all new customers until they could tweak their system for higher volumes. With their work complete, on January 11, 2006 they started sending out invitations to people who had “expressed an interest” in the service.

I received my invite on January 20th and have been pleased with the setup process.

Hello,

We are ready for you to create your Google Analytics account! Thank you for your patience during this process.

To create your Google Analytics account, please follow the instructions below. If your site receives more than 1 million pageviews per day, please contact us by replying to this message before signing up so that we can ensure proper service.

As will all things Google, simplicity is their trademark - Search, Google Base, AdSense, etc. The setup is intuitive and doesn’t require a crash course in programming or analytics - although Google provides an excellent Help section for the service.

For those needing more information or assistance though, Google and Zaaz announced a consulting partnership on Tuesday that “ensures Google Analytics customers have access to the high-end data analysis and marketing optimization services”. According to the press release, “as part of the agreement, ZAAZ will maintain proficiency in using Google Analytics and will provide fee-based, value-added professional services to Google Analytics customers.” For more information, visit http://www.zaaz.com/googleanalytics

I’m also running an older version of Urchin (the application purchased by Google and used for the new service) so it will be interesting to compare the two services in the coming weeks. No data is available for my site yet. According to the application, I’m “Waiting for data. Analytics has been successfully installed and data is being gathered now.”
